With no tall leaders, the party is not battle ready
Party literally searching for candidates
HYDERABAD: The BJP is in a state of confusion with no tall leaders in the party ready to jump into the electoral fray. The party that once had a very strong presence in the twin cities and the potential to grow further is now literally searching for candidates for the three Assembly constituencies in the city.
“The mood is not so enthusiastic. Neither the leaders nor the cadre are ready to face the polls,” admitted a senior party leader.
But Greater Hyderabad BJP president Chintala Ramachandra Reddy exuded confidence that the party has its strengths in every constituency. “Our stand on Telangana and the issues of common man we take up regularly are our strengths,” he said. Regarding fielding the candidates, he said the party has to take a decision but the city unit is all geared up to face the elections.
With the exception of K. Lakshman, who represented the Musheerabad constituency from 1999 to 2004 there is hardly any leader in other constituencies who can match up to the candidates from other major parties.
Dr. Lakshman is certain to contest from Musheerabad and he too has made his intentions clear to the party leadership. In fact, he lost by a very narrow margin of 240 votes despite the wave of Congress-TRS combine. With TRS and Congress now bound to contest separately, the party can nurse some hopes in this constituency.
Senior party leaders admit that they don’t have strong candidates for Khairatabad and Secunderabad constituencies. Moreover, none of the leaders want to take the risk of contesting this time and those eyeing on these constituencies want to save money for the general elections. But if the party takes a decision to field candidates senior leaders like Venkatramani, Ramchander Rao and Venu Yadav might be asked to contest from Secunderabad constituency and Bheem Rao from Khairatabad.
